Hair Restoration: Dr. Joel Beck

Many people come to Beck Aesthetic Surgery for hair restoration because they notice their hair beginning to thin and have become worried about what the future will bring.

Male pattern baldness (called androgenetic alopecia) and female pattern baldness impact in the range of 30 million women and 50 million men in the USA.

Many people choose to do something about it rather than just accepting the fact that even more extensive hair loss is just around the corner.

Dr. Joel Beck utilizes the latest treatments and procedures in hair restoration to help patients maintain thick, healthy hair. This includes effective treatments for balding or thinning hair as well as hair restoration techniques to achieve a thicker beard or stronger brows.

What Causes Hair Loss?

The thickness and quality of a person’s hair is most often determined by genetics. If your mother’s father — or your own father — are bald, chances are you will lose some of your hair. In some cases, it can be a side effect of medication. No matter what the cause may be or at what tier your hair loss is, Dr. Beck’s hair restoration techniques make it possible to limit the amount of hair you lose and to restore healthy growth.

Hair Miniaturization: A Symptom

The hair follicles move through various phases, and each one is programmed to produce hair for about two to six years — after which it will go dormant. With about 100,000 follicles on the scalp, the dormant follicles don’t present a problem. That is, until the hair strands start to change.

It’s been discovered through medical research that the hair follicles are impacted when an enzyme in the follicle interacts with testosterone, binding to receptors in the follicles and shrinking them in size. As they shrink, the hair produced is thinner and finer, with the follicle eventually rendered unable to produce any hair.

How to Stop Hair Loss

Weak, damaged, or thinning hair typically gets worse, not better. When you see that you’re losing many hairs every day after showering or when you notice that your hair is losing strength and thickness, it’s important to get treatment immediately. Taking steps now can help you avoid undergoing a more invasive treatment later. You’ll need a full evaluation of your current hair loss in order to determine the most effective treatment for your individual case. Dr. Beck is available to help you restore the thickness and quality of your hair with the treatment that will be most effective for you.

Tier 1 Hair Loss

Tier 1 is the earliest stage of hair loss. It can begin early in life, with some people noticing the initial stages as early as late adolescence or their early 20s.

The symptoms of tier 1 hair loss include:

  • Hair strands become thinner and weaker
  • Hair texture changes
  • Increased hair shedding

Seeking Treatment Early On

It’s normal for a person to shed up to 100 hairs a day with most of this shedding going unnoticed. However, if you’re shedding a large amount of hair every day or if you notice that the quality and strength of your hair is changing, early intervention is very important.

Treating Tier 1 hair loss may involve the use of FDA-approved medications or the use of PRP (platelet-rich plasma) injections. PRP is extracted from your own blood in a procedure that utilizes your plasma’s own growth factors to trigger healthier hair growth. Several approved topical medications are known to be effective in halting further hair loss.

Developments in medical science have led to groundbreaking new topical treatments that are very effective, but the treatment should be started immediately. If you wait too long to treat Tier 1 hair loss, the condition will advance to a more serious level and will require a more invasive procedure. If you’re already in a later stage of hair loss, don’t worry. We use breakthrough treatments and systems for hair restoration.

Tier 2 Hair Loss

Tier 2 hair loss involves a slowly receding hairline, with more of the forehead being revealed. While it may be natural to have a slightly receding hairline, this early stage of hair loss can advance if not treated, leading to further hairline recession.

Noticeable thinning is not yet extreme in Tier 2, although limp, droopy hair, broken hair strands, brittle hair, and thinner strands are present. The hair follicles are starting to fail and are no longer producing an abundance of strong, healthy hair strands.

Treating Tier 2 hair loss involves addressing the problem at its source: the hair follicle.

The noticeable changes in hair growth associated with Tier 2 include:

  • Hairline begins to recede
  • Loss of hair at temples
  • Hair appears to be slightly thinning
  • Hair is limp, droopy, broken, and brittle

Tier 3 Hair Loss

Tier 3 hair loss must be treated with more than simply a topical cream. Most people who are living with Tier 3 hair loss are candidates for hair transplants to fill in the balding or receding areas. If you’re unhappy with the appearance of your hair and feel that you now look less attractive due to balding, we can help you restore a healthier, more youthful head of hair — with a far shorter recovery time than was possible with traditional hair restoration techniques.

Symptoms of Tier 3 Hair Loss

  • Patchy hair
  • Circular balding areas
  • Hair loss at temples
  • Thinning hair at crown
  • Receding hairline

NeoGraft Hair Restoration for Tier 3 Hair Loss

When results are finalized, hair transplants should look natural and never be noticeable as a cosmetic alteration. Dr. Beck uses an advanced hair restoration procedure called NeoGraft® that produces far superior results than traditional hair transplant methods. NeoGraft is done using the FUE (follicular unit extraction) method in which each follicle is harvested alone rather than by the traditional strip method, which leaves a vertical scar on the back of the head.

About NeoGraft: The Benefits

NeoGraft is a groundbreaking advancement in hair restoration. As the only FDA-approved system for harvesting follicular units for implantation, it is a revolution in hair transplant technology. The NeoGraft system is automated for a faster, less invasive, and more effective way to transplant healthy hairs to a thinning area of the scalp.

What is FUE?

FUE can successfully restore hair for men or women who are living with a receding hairline, bald spots, or thinning hair. Healthy hair follicles are harvested with NeoGraft from the back of the head — where the hair follicles aren’t programmed for baldness, and where you have plenty of healthy hair follicles.

What Makes NeoGraft Different

Older hair transplant techniques tend to look unnatural, with the hairs placed in man-made rows that are often obvious to others. Our approach to Tier 3 hair loss is to create a random, natural look, with healthy hair follicles transplanted with meticulous attention to detail so the restoration truly looks like natural hair. In addition, older hair transplant techniques require a longer recovery time. NeoGraft speeds the process for extraction and implantation for shorter appointments and minimal recovery time.

Incorporating PRP for Healing

To speed healing, treatment with PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is an added element that helps the transplanted hairs flourish. PRP is taken from a small quantity of your own blood. It will be processed to extract the plasma, which is filled with natural growth factors. The goal of using PRP in our hair restoration treatment is to leave you looking and feeling confident and attractive, and to leave you exceptionally pleased with the results.

Results: What to Expect After Transplant

Results will depend on what area is treated and the number of follicular units that are transplanted. Right after your hair transplant, the hairs will be quite tiny and they will need time before they begin to grow. When they do begin to grow, it won’t feel very strong. It will feel soft and fine. However, these hairs will eventually get stronger, healthier, and more dense. At about nine months, you should see new robust hair growth.

Which hair restoration treatment is right for me?

Can I transplant other people’s hair onto my head?

Due to compatibility issues, you can only use your own hair follicles for a hair transplant. Attempting to use another person’s hair would result in rejection of the follicles and likely an infection.

How many hair restoration treatments will I need?

The amount of treatments you’ll need will depend on the cause of your hair loss, what tier you’re at, and your specific areas of concern. During your consultation with Dr. Beck, he can give you a clearer idea of how many treatments you may need based on your unique case.

Will other people be able to tell that I’ve had a hair loss procedure?

Gone are the days of fake-looking hair that announce your procedure. When hair loss treatments are done properly by an expert such as Dr. Beck, the results look natural. He knows how to achieve the appearance of organic growth with careful placement.

Do I need to schedule time off of work for NeoGraft?

Because NeoGraft is minimally invasive, you’ll be able to return to work one to three days following the procedure. You should be able to easily hide any obvious signs of the procedure being done.

Which hair restoration treatment is right for me?

The only way this question can be answered is in person. Dr. Beck will need to speak with you, understand which tier level you’re at, and examine your hair to determine the ideal hair restoration procedure for you.
