NeoGraft vs. Strip Method

If you’re considering hair transplants, it’s crucial for you to understand the differences between the NeoGraft system and the strip method.

What is the Strip Method?

The strip method is a traditional technique for hair transplant by which hair follicles are harvested by removing a strip of your scalp. Once it’s removed, the strip is stitched back together and with the use of a microscope, it’s cut into tiny grafts for transplantation. In some cases, the strip method may be the only option for patients — such as those with extreme balding. However, this method has some drawbacks. It’s a long and grueling procedure that requires many hours to perform.  It also has a longer recovery time and the patient will be left with a linear scar afterward that is visible with any shorter haircut.

What is the NeoGraft Method?

The NeoGraft method is completely different than the strip method. Rather than taking a piece of your scalp, grafts are taken from the back of the head in 1mm punches, each of which holds from one to four follicles. This is an enhanced version of the FUE (follicular unit extraction) technique in which healthy hair follicle units are removed from the back of the head and then strategically implanted where hair growth is wanted. FUE can be performed manually, but the NeoGraft system takes this technique to another level. Manual FUE allows for about 750 grafts to be harvested in one appointment, while the NeoGraft automated system allows for up to 2,500.

Why is the Strip Method Still Used?

Plastic surgeons can vary in the type of hair transplant method they use. Some originally learned the strip method and continue to use it due to being unwilling to change, or they may not be ready to invest the time and money in shifting their methods to the NeoGraft system.

    NeoGraft vs. Traditional Surgery

NeoGraft is a major advancement in hair transplant technology, and we are excited to offer it at our Charlotte hair restoration clinic. Why put yourself through a surgical approach to hair restoration when NeoGraft is an option? Traditional hair transplant technology involves hours and hours — and leaves you with a vertical scar on your scalp that must be hidden under a longer hairstyle. Because the NeoGraft system removes hair follicles one by one, there’s virtually no visible scarring. The transplantation process is also performed with an automated surgical implant tool for consistent implantation sites. It’s a truly groundbreaking advance in hair transplant technology, as the extraction is automated, faster, and protects the hair follicle so it’s more likely to flourish when transplanted to the thinning area. Rather than suffering through a long, extensive surgical procedure, your hair transplant procedure can be performed in less time — with less impact on you and your body.

What to Expect During Your NeoGraft Treatment

When you arrive for your FUE NeoGraft appointment, the back of your head will be shaved, if it is not already. You will be given injections to numb your head, and you will then be made comfortable lying face-down on a medical chair, and Dr. Beck will begin the procedure. The NeoGraft’s handheld device will be used to make tiny, circular incisions in the scalp to remove the hair follicles.

The device is essentially a tiny tube with a sharp edge to “punch into” the scalp. The device also has a suction tube connected that helps pull the grafts out. Once the units have been removed and prepared for transplant, Dr. Beck will use a fine, needle-point instrument to create tiny recipient sites in the areas where hair growth is needed. She will immediately graft the hair follicles into these areas in a natural-looking pattern. The placed hair follicles can now become healthy, hair-producing follicles. After this, your head will then be dressed with surgical gauze or dressings.

    After the Procedure

There is very little downtime and recovery involved with NeoGraft. You may have a headache for a day or so, as well as slight swelling at the injection sites. The majority of patients return to their normal daily routine within three to five days.

    • Seven to ten days: The incisions made on your scalp will be healed by now, so you can go back to your regular hair products.
    • One to five weeks: The implanted hairs will start shedding because your hair will begin a new growth phase.
    • Four months: New hair growth can be seen at this point!
    • Eight to twelve months: Your new hair will be growing at a normal rate.

    Eyebrow Restoration

Thick, lush eyebrows are an attractive facial enhancement, but many people struggle with thin, sparse, or patchy brows or begin to lose brow hair due to age.

Dr. Beck uses an advanced hair restoration technique for eyebrow hair transplants that produces exceptional results. Rather than using cosmetics to try to achieve the look you want, you can create natural brows with living hair.

    What Causes Brow Hair Loss?

Perfectly formed, thick brows frame your eyes, drawing attention and creating a more dramatic look. Unfortunately, brow hair can begin to thin as a result of various genetic and environmental factors, including:

    • Low thyroid
    • Side effect of chemotherapy or radiation therapy
    • Anemia
    • An array of physical ailments and conditions
    • Injuries
    • Dietary deficiencies
    • Genetics
    • Extensive brow plucking in the past
    • Aggressive electrolysis or laser hair reduction
    • Some cosmetics
    • Some medications

    NeoGraft Brow Restoration

NeoGraft offers the ability to significantly improve your eyebrows. When performed properly by a hair restoration expert such as Dr. Beck who has extensive experience in this procedure, the outcome of brow restoration is truly impressive.

Dr. Beck has dedicated his plastic surgery practice to helping people experience higher levels of confidence in their appearance through a wide range of surgical and non-surgical enhancements, and he is highly skilled in eyebrow hair restoration using the NeoGraft system.

    How Eyebrow Hair Restoration Works

Eyebrow hair restoration is an outpatient procedure and does not involve scalpels or incisions. It also doesn’t leave visible scars. The automated method by which hair follicles are removed is far better for the patient, as there is little recovery time involved.

The process works by taking the following steps:

    1. The eyebrow area will be marked for accuracy in transplanting hair to the brows. Men and women have different types of brows; therefore, the detail with which the angle and arch is created is critical. Dr. Beck uses extreme care in planning the exact point at which the hair will be implanted, along with the direction it will grow.
    2. Local anesthetic is applied to the brow and to the removal site to ensure patient comfort.
    3. Single hair follicles are removed from the nape of the neck with the NeoGraft automated system. On this area of the head, a greater number of single-hair producing follicles are present: the correct follicles for eyebrow hair restoration. The diameter of these hairs is also very similar to the hair strands in eyebrows, making them the optimal removal site for this specific procedure.
    4. The single follicles are carefully transplanted to the brow area and placed with meticulous care so the new hair grows in the right direction, exactly like natural eyebrow hair.

What to Expect After Eyebrow Hair Restoration

Immediately following the procedure, your brows will appear thicker. You won’t need to take days off work and will be able to continue with your usual activities. As with any hair transplant, during the initial stage the transplanted hair will shed. After shedding, in the following weeks the now-healthy follicles will begin to produce new hair. This may take a few months, but the results are well worth the wait. You’ll have thicker, fuller, natural-looking brows.

    Facial Hair Restoration

    Beards, Mustache, and Sideburns

Are you one of the many men who are unable to grow a thick, healthy beard? If you have less facial hair than you want or your beard looks patchy, thin, or uneven, we can help. With the NeoGraft hair restoration system, hair can be transplanted to the face to create a thicker, fuller mustache, beard, or sideburns.

The transplanted hair can create the look you envision for yourself: a more rugged and masculine look, which is considered by many to be very attractive.

    How it Works

Using the NeoGraft system, the harvested hairs are taken from the back of the head, where the hairs are thick and healthy. After extracting the follicle, it will be placed in the facial zone to be filled in, where it will flourish — and will subsequently be shaved, groomed, oiled, shaped, or grow to the length you envision. When the procedure is performed by Dr. Beck, a highly-skilled plastic surgeon with extensive experience in facial hair restoration, it’s impossible to tell the transplanted hairs from naturally-occurring ones. Your look will appear very natural.

    Beard Transplant Recovery

NeoGraft has revolutionized hair transplantation technology. The automated system for follicle extraction is far less hard on the body, and takes only a few short days to heal.

The extraction points are very small and shrink quickly, becoming unnoticeable with no vertical scar.

Once the follicles are transplanted to the beard, mustache, or sideburns area, they are covered with a bandage to keep the zone clean for the next 24 hours.

The extraction sites require about one week to heal, so during this time you won’t be able to wash your face and hair as normal.

A few weeks after transplantation, the hair follicles that have been implanted into the face will shed. This is a normal response to the shock of moving them, but soon they will begin to produce natural hairs. The full result is visible within six to nine months, but it will be well worth the wait. Your beard will be thicker, lusher, and more robust.
