Sculptra

Sculptra is an injectable containing poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a collagen stimulator. Sculptra is designed to increase facial volume where skin has lost its supple, youthful volume due to a breakdown in collagen. It is known for creating natural-looking, contoured results that are exceptionally long-lasting.

How Sculptra Works

Sculptra is injected into the treatment area to help gradually replace lost collagen and correct a wide range of facial wrinkles from shallow to deep. Sculptra works within your body to revitalize collagen production that has lessened due to aging. As PLLA microparticles are absorbed, they help trigger collagen production and your skin’s underlying structure. This is a gradual process and can take three or four injections over three or four months to complete the treatment. Results can last as long as two years. The PLLA is both biocompatible and biodegradable, so it will be naturally absorbed by the body.

The Sculptra Procedure

Similar to other dermal fillers in general procedure, Sculptra requires a relatively deep injection and the treatment requires multiple sessions. Key points related to the procedure are:

  • Sculptra results are seen gradually over time, not instantly. The effects Sculptra produces are seen as natural collagen production is stimulated deep within the skin structure. Over a few weeks, wrinkles and lines smooth. One of the chief advantages of this is a more natural and organic result.
  • Sculptra is administered in a series of treatments; it is not a one treatment procedure and the two or three treatments needed will be over several months. This is why Sculptra results can last up to two years – much longer than other dermal fillers – and provide such natural-looking results.
  • Sculptra may cause some light bruising. Blood thinning medications and alcohol should be avoided for a few days before the procedure.
  • Do not apply makeup or lotions on the day of your appointment.
  • Avoid the sun before and after your procedure to reduce the chances of swelling or bruising.
  • Recovery is quick with no downtime.
  • Results are very natural looking, and most people will only notice that you look more youthful.

Sculptra Longevity: After the Treatment

Your collagen producing and depletion process changes as you age and where you are at in this process will largely determine how long the Sculptra results will last. Clinical studies have shown that results can last at least two years but because collagen molecules can last seven years or longer, the improvements from Sculptra can last for up to two years. Longevity depends upon age, lifestyle, health, and your skincare routine.
